PIANZEA stands for the Pacific Islands, Australia and New Zealand Electoral Administrator’s Network. PIANZEA is a semi-formal association of electoral administrators working in the Pacific region who come together to network, share information and provide mutual assistance in support of electoral processes in the region.

How was PIANZEA formed?

The PIANZEA network was founded at Korolevu, Fiji in October 1997. At that meeting several Pacific countries came together to sign the Warwick Declaration which continued and maintained in the Pacific spirit this close association of Pacific electoral administrators. The declaration was supported by 15 countries at the time and provides for networking, information sharing and mutual assistance.

How does PIANZEA assist?

Throughout the years, PIANZEA has supported Pacific countries with a range of activities including training, exchanges, conferences, technical support and advice. PIANZEA’s current work program includes BRIDGE (Building Resources in Democracy, Governance and Elections) training; generic voter registration system support; knowledge exchanges; workshops and conferences amongst other activities.

Who is part of PIANZEA?

Electoral management bodies from the following countries are part of the PIANZEA network: Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, Republic of Kiribati, Republic of Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Republic of Palau, Independent State of Papua New Guinea, Independent State of Samoa, Solomon Islands, Kingdom of Tonga, Tokelau, Tuvalu, Republic of Vanuatu, Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (associate member). How is PIANZEA managed and supported?

PIANZEA member countries manage and direct PIANZEA activities through a PIANZEA Advisory Group (PAG). Each region within the Pacific (Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia) together with Australia and New Zealand has one representative on the PAG.
